This is an account of a true life Indiana Jones type of adventure. Specifically, it details the search for the "White City," also known by the name in the title, in Honduras. The city's very existence was something of a dubious legend for…

A gripping work of reportage about the search for the remains of an ancient central American civilisation, probably wiped out by disease.

A detailed, researched-science-based story by a National Geographic writer of the finding and exploration of an abandoned city in the jungles of Honduras. He also describes the disease many of those involved emerged with, and the…

DISREGARD jlorimor REVIEW PLEASE! We should be reviewing the book, not espousing our personal beliefs which have nothing to do with the story. Really great, thrilling & well-researched tale of this lost city. A shame Morde felt he had to…

The book has some fascinating sections but the overall impression of it is greatly diminished by the global warming pontificating in the last chapter. Preston has mindlessly joined this cargo-cult religion that is doing more harm to more…

A wonderful non-fiction story of trying to find the lost city of the monkey god. This book tells the story of the expedition in Honduras to find a lost city. Very interesting.

This is still such a relevant and poignant read, especially when it discusses how pandemics have occurred in ancient history to modern times. Above all, glimpsing a culture fairly unknown outside of the indigenous people of Mosquitia, this…

Allow Douglas Preston to take you on an adventure from your snake-less, insect-free armchair. It's a journey worth taking.

Hondurans have for generations been passing down a legend of a "lost" city deep in their mountainous rain forests. Although the tale has long piqued the interest of explorers and treasure hunters, few had up until now discovered sufficient…

Good overview of how awful the jungle is and man's insatiable curiosity and drive for knowledge. Also a primer on how awful Honduras is and how corruption and bad government can keep things awful. This really reads more like a proposal…

I have always been drawn to archaeology and Mesoamerica, and at one time, I wanted to become an archaeologist working Maya and Aztec sites. Two things changed my mind: no hot water and snakes. Get those things taken care of and I'm good…

For centuries, Hondurans passed down the story of a rich, ancient settlement, called the "White City of the Monkey God," lost to time and the jungle. The city was rumored to hide a treasure trove of gold and artifacts. For explorers,…

I've always been fascinated by archaeological discoveries and remember reading about this one in the news. I Don't think we fully appreciate the ordeal - both foreseen and unforeseen - that are involved in the systematic and scholarly…

This was a very interesting "True Story" to read, and anyone that says it was boring or not that great, doesn't understand this was a True Story and not a work of fiction or imagination. I love the archaeology field and stories of Lost…

If you enjoyed the “Lost City of Z”, not the movie, you’ll enjoy this one.

Originally, I thought this was written by his brother, Richard. I always enjoy travel/adventure stories and glad I read this one. I can recall the story vaguely but I still maintain some vivid images based on his descriptions.

A fascinating true tale! If you like reading about mystery, archaeology, meso-american history, or epidemiology, you'll love this book / audiobook. The author, Preston, actually participated in the dangerous expeditions into the jungle…

This is an entertaining read by a National Geographic writer about finding a lost civilization of legend in a remote, unexplored, rugged rain forest of Honduras. The book is roughly divided in three sections: a description of the history…

This is an amazingly interesting non-fiction book, well written, with lots of history. The descriptions are very real, the rain forests and the lost city history was well narrated and researched. I think one of the most interesting parts…

Excellent read for arm chair explorers: the legend, the virgin tropical forest, the fer-de-lance, the bunch of septuagenarians, the archaeology, the LIDAR, the curse and a "raving Christopher Lloyd."

Thought it was just ok. I periodically lost interest in the book as I thought it was written very uneven.

Archaeology, history, deadly diseases and animals, plus a mystery of an ancient civilization that vanished? Yep, I'm all in. Very much enjoyed this!
