Harry Bosch's life is on the edge. His earthquake-damaged home has been condemned. His girlfriend has left him. He's drinking too much. And after attacking his commanding officer, he's even had to turn in his L.A.P.D. detective's badge. Now, suspended indefinitely pending a psychiatric evaluation, he's spending his time investigating an unsolved crime from 1961: the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother.

Even after three decades, Harry's questions generate heat among L.A.'s top politicos. And as the truth begins to emerge, it becomes more and more apparent that someone wants to keep it buried. Someone very powerful...very cunning...and very deadly.

Edgar Award-winning author Michael Connelly has created a dark, fast-paced suspense thriller that cuts to the core of Harry Bosch's character. Once you start it, there's no turning back.

Harry Bosch is just not my favourite kind of person. Trusts no one, trigger temper, quick to judge, a closed personality, I could go on. No wonder he has been suspended - he pushed his superior officer through a window. No wonder his latest girlfriend has left him. No wonder he's been referred to Behavioural Sciences for psychological evaluation before he can rejoin the LAPD Homicide squad in Hollywood. His analyst, Carmen Hinojos, asks the right question, "What is your mission Detective Bosch?" He realizes that it is to solve a 30-year old case, the murder of his prostitute mother. Harry does have the smarts and the skills for this complicated job and you see glimpses of possible solutions and then Connelly takes them away. I'll read more Bosch but I wanted to throttle him, "Harry, you're attitude is part of the reason this case is much more difficult than it should be."

I may be biased [having grown up an orphan myself], but I believe this is one of the best, if not the best [always hopeful for future Bosches, though] yet - - - Mr. C. outdoes himself in the carefully crafted plotting with this masterfully engaging mystery.

Interesting but not one of the better ones.

I was enthralled.I'm so glad Allen and Unwin saw fit to re-issue it for Down-Under fans of Harry Bosch.Long may it stay in print.

The story moves along fairly slowly. But I would consider it required reading for Bosch fans. It expands his back story significantly and provides insight into his melancholy history and character. Looking forward to reading more.

Connelly gives the reader a deeper picture of Harry Bosch in this book as he investigates the death of his mother while on stress leave from the LAPD. He has recently lost his girl friend and his house has been condemned after the earthquake shook the house off its moorings. In the course of interviewing people with information about his mother's case, Harry meets and gets involved with a new lady. His relationship with her complicates his life in new ways, but also provides a crucial alibi for a murder he finds himself accused of when he returns from FL. A great read with many twists and turns. I didn't want it to end.
