An elegiac paean to the bygone way of life of the European bourgeoisie in the days before the First World War. In the enchanted, otherworldly realm of an exclusive tuberculosis sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, Hans Castorp--a simple yet shrewd young scion of a respectable Hamburg family--undergoes a transformation through a series of adventures unimaginable in the mundane world of the "flatlands."

A brilliant work of art , most great authors give us a magnificent display of their beliefs and philosophy but Mann shows us a brilliant debate between two conflicting schools of thought and like all great works, leaves us with more questions than answers .

Sweet reading ... if you can persist with this masterpiece right through to completion, you're in for a real treat. One of my favourite books of all time, this one translated by John Woods is new and has been critically acclaimed as being closer to the essence of Mann's German prose than the original English translation that came out while the author was still living. Taking place in a sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, young Hans Castorp arrives for a short visit and ends up staying for seven years.
