My kindergarten class is just learning to read. They enjoyed trying to read the sentences before the video read it to them. Each word turns yellow as it is being read and so even the ones that are struggling were able to follow along. The stories were simple and positive, appropriate for every family. The only thing I didn't like is that the narrator read the word "a" as "uh" instead of properly saying "a".

Great for beginning readers. "Pat sat on the mat." Excellent pictures illustrating each sentence to help with vocabulary development [word-picture correspondence]. The stories increase in complexity as you go along. Each time the page turns there is a short musical lead in [maybe 10 - 20 seconds?] that allows the parent / teacher to pause it and have the child read the words him- or her- self. Or, the adult could preview the picture with the child to predict what the words will be about. Whatever the reader needs.

My only criticism is that the narrator mispronounces the word "a" as /uh/ - in the sloppy way most people do - rather than pronouncing it correctly /ay/. If this is a big deal for you , be warned.

Otherwise , this is a great DVD.

I stopped it almost as soon as it began. The title "Phonics" is very deceiving. The program begins with memorization words.
