In Alan Alda's directorial debut, three very close-knit upper middle-class couples take a vacation together, which turns out to be a bittersweet exploration of not only their friendship, but divorce and its consequences.

A reluctant 3 stars. There's some good things in this Alan Alda directed picture but Alan isn't really one of them. However, Carol Burnette is , and she gives a layered mature performance as Alda's wife. The story revolves around 3 mostly bickering couples who share vacations together, fight ,and then tell each other how much they love one another. In other words classic mid 80s psycho-therapy. The character played by Jack Weston is totally repugnant , a whiney, petulant, self centered hypochondriac, and why anyone would invite him to dinner let alone a weeks' vacation is amazing. Still , the attempt at examining a simple thing like friendships is worthwhile and rarely, especially now, is a movie made about it. For that the Four Seasons is worth viewing.

When I was a teenager my parents made me turn off this movie because of the bad language and all these years later I wanted to know if this picture got any better. The answer is no. A bunch of bickering middle-aged couples go on vacations together and drive each other crazy. Not one to rewatch.
