In 1959, Truman Capote was a popular writer for The New Yorker. He learns about the horrific and senseless murder of a family of four in Halcomb, Kansas. Inspired by the story, Capote and his partner, Harper Lee, travel to the town to do research for an article. However, as Capote digs deeper into the story, he is inspired to expand the project into what would be his greatest work, "In Cold Blood." He arranges extensive interviews with the prisoners, especially with Perry Smith. However, his feelings of compassion for Perry conflicts with his need for closure for his book which only an execution can provide. That conflict and the mixed motives for both interviewer and subject make for a troubling experience that would produce an literary account that would redefine modern non-fiction.

A fascinating character study and riveting crime drama centered around Philip Seymour Hoffman, who justifiably won the Academy Award for his spot-on portrayal of the quirky, affected author Truman Capote. Here we find Capote fresh off the success of his book "Breakfast at Tiffany's," working for the New Yorker and looking for his next inspiration. A story out of Kansas piques his interest: a farmer and his entire family found brutally murdered. Accompanied by his childhood friend, Harper Lee (well-played also by Catherine Keener), Capote takes the next train to Kansas to find out all he can about the story. When the alleged killers are apprehended, as Capote meets with them to research their backgrounds he finds himself unwittingly embarking on a sort of friendship with one of them. Complex characters and a strong attention to detail help make this a superb film.

Hoffman was brilliant. I'm old enough to remember Capote on the talk show circuit and whatnot. Hoffman nails it. The overall story is well done, too. Great biopic. Fix yourself some fancy hors d'oeuvres, make a nice cheese plate, pour yourself some wine, and enjoy this excellent movie.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman was riveting, and the supporting characters were excellent. The film captured that chapter of Capote's life in a very compelling way.

Excellent movie. I can see why Seymour won best actor. I'll probably read the book now. Ann Rule is a great true crime writer so it should be interesting what I think of the book In Cold Blood.

I thought this movie was great and mourn the loss of a great actor, Why are all the good ones hooked on drugs?

It's a solid film but you're watching it for Hoffman's performance. The transformation is amazing and is a sad reminder of what we're never going to see on film again.

Philip Seymour Hoffman gives a standout performance, but I can't call this a great movie. It is an interesting portrayal of self-indulgence and voyeurism. Like Hoffman, I remember Capote from the talk show circuit as a wonderful raconteur, high-pitched and flamboyant.

Enjoyed this movie. Was surprised because I thought it would be more about Capote's entire life BUT was in fact about the most significant part of his life. Philip Seymour Hoffman was great as was Mary Keener. Dan Futterman, who I have always liked as an actor did an excellent job on his first job as a screenwriter.
I knew primarily of Capote because of tabloids but did not realize how sad his life became as a result of In Cold Blood.

Amazing! This movie is a gripping tale about the research and writing done by Truman Capote for his acclaimed book, "In Cold Blood". This is an artistic movie with talented actors about the traumatic events that motivated Capote, who was a talented and perceptive man, to write the masterpiece of his career. The movie also explores the metamorphosis that was wrought within Capote during the five years that it took for all the events to unfold. The actors and director have been faithful to the complexity of both the characters and the story, which means that I will need to watch this movie many times before I will have absorbed all that it presents to me.
