America's Century of Regime Change From Hawaii to Iraq

"Regime change" did not begin with the administration of George W. Bush, but has been part of U.S. foreign policy for more than one hundred years. Starting with the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and continuing into our own time, the United States has not hesitated to overthrow governments that stood in the way of its political and economic goals. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 is the latest, though perhaps not the last, example of the dangers inherent in these operations. Foreign correspondent Kinzer tells the stories of the audacious politicians, spies, military commanders, and business executives who took it upon themselves to depose monarchs, presidents, and prime ministers in fourteen countries, including Cuba, Iran, South Vietnam, Chile, and Iraq. He also shows that the U.S. government has often pursued these operations without understanding the countries involved; as a result, many of them have had disastrous long-term consequences.--From publisher description.

A great intro into the history of America's interventionist foreign policy. This is the first history book I read after 9/11 to try to understand the US from the world's viewpoint. The US has never been the altruistic "world's policeman" that we've been fed. After reading OVERTHROW you will never be able to hear world events without asking yourself, "What are the real causes of this that I am not being told?" And you will begin your search for answers.

Today, as the drums of war beat loudly with the American involvement in the ousted presidents of the Ukraine and Honduras, we see the propaganda and tensions both rising. The present is what makes this book of the immediate past so very important today! Is it just a coincidence that VP Joe Biden's son is a director at a corporation which is mining for gas in the Ukraine? Or perhaps you never read the transcript of that Russian-released telephone call between neocon, Victoria Nuland of the US State Department, and the American embassy in Ukraine? Never read any of those WikiLeaked state department cables concerning the Ukraine? You really are clueless, I guess? Then you'd want to read this book as quickly as possible.
