Written in non-specialized language for the layperson, this encyclopedia contains entries on a wide range of topics, including education, death and dying, family development, parenting, cognitive development, mental health, language and communications, personality, social development and behavior, substance abuse, and research methods and measurement. There are over 600 articles, with cross-references and bibliography included with each. Thirty-eight articles are short biographies, and 14 are devoted to race, religion, and ethnicity. A sampling of entry topics includes gangs, ageism, stroke, magical thinking, theory of mind, empty nest, inborn errors of metabolism, reflexes, thalassemia, mood disorders, smiling, and imprinting. An appendix contains various tables and figures with national and international statistics. A full bibliography is included in v.3.
