Add a CommentThe Red Balloon was wonderful and whimsical. Interesting to think about how the special effects were accomplished back in the 50s. I can see why this movie is a classic.
White Mane, on the other hand, was disturbing. Watching the horses fight, especially knowing there wasn't any sort of animal protection during filming back then, was upsetting. The relentless pursuit of this poor animal was also upsetting. I wouldn't recommend it for kids, though The Red Balloon would be fine.
Loved this whimsical and shining movie, set largely in the charming culture amid the devastation still prominent in Paris a few years after the war. The little boy ran with his red balloon through fields pockmarked with craters, and among buildings falling to bits, just as I remember London when I was a kid. Innocence triumphs, but not by overcoming evil, rather by escaping it, presenting a dilemma and a decision we all have to make eventually .... as someone said earlier in this thread, redemption is the theme ....... French existentialism at its height ...... White Mane is a similar movie made by the same folks, lovely adventure and ride .....
A sensitive and often funny film, but ultimately about redemption. I was distracted by wondering how they filmed it.
Saw this as a child (50 yrs ago) it is beautiful beyond description and has not lost it's magic 4 me or any children I introduce it 2. The lack of dialogue adds to the charm and it's universal appeal. It would be a shame 4 any child to miss the opportunity to view this; no matter what their age. A great way 2 spend some rainy day time.
The sweet innocence and charm of a bygone age.
A wonderful story of a little boy and a red balloon. Great film!
Wonderful and beautiful. A simple story of a boy and his balloon, who at times seems a little more human. Takes time to enable the viewer to invest in the story and it's central characters.
a magical tale of the lure of a red balloon.
There are hardly any words spoken in this film; however, it is a beautiful and poignant tribute to childhood and friendship, despite the violence and cruelty of the world.
