The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a must-read, with its gripping plot, relatable characters, and action-packed scenes. The story is based in future Noth America, in a nation called Panem, which consists of a ruling Capital and twelve districts that provide for it. As punishment for a rebellion, and to keep the districts in check, the Capital forces them to provide one boy and one girl each year to compete in the Hunger Games, a televised game where the children must fight each other till one is left standing. The heroine, Katniss Everdeen, whose daily worries consist of keeping her family safe and feed, is forced into the games when she takes the place of her younger sister. If she wants to survive, she must decide between what is morally right, and survival, all while trying her best not to be killed. From the very first page, the story is hooking and fast-paced. There are very little lulls in the action, for from the very beginning Katniss is drawn into the games, and all the hubbub around it. All of the characters are relatable, especially Katniss. Her core values, of keeping her sister safe and trying to survive in circumstances beyond her control are written in such a simple yet eloquent way that readers can relate, and are sucked into the story. Additionally, Suzanne Collins is a remarkable writer, able to draw the reader in by her outstanding use of imagery. Readers can easily visualize the fights, thanks to her use of detail. I give this book 5 stars, and recommend it to anyone who likes strong female characters, action, or dystopian fiction.

I know I'm late jumping on the bandwagon here, but I really loved this book. I hesitated to read this because I had written it off as teenage fluff. Boy was I wrong. This was also a great distraction, and I was more than happy to slip into this immersive world and lose myself in Katniss' plight.

I love this series and the world in polarizing and fascinating, definitely a commentary on politics. I love Katniss and her sacrifice, she is a character that is so interesting and yes she is a strong female character.

A good read! I would definitely recommend! The Hunger Games, in my opinion, is the best book of the trilogy. It's thought provoking, suspenseful and action packed, and there are even scenes to make your cry (I certainly did). If you've only seen the movie, I'd strongly recommend reading the book, there's more in the book that the movie doesn't show.
