The idea of pop and jazz singers doing show tunes is one of the most elementary. Nancy Wilson, who was one of the most consistently excellent vocal artists of the '50's and '60's, found the showtune format very appealing and made several albums of this material.Just as the songs themselves do double duty, so too do the re-interpretations by Nancy Wilson and Jimmy Jones. These treatments can either maintain the same mood that the songs did in their original contexts or sometimes Wilson and Jones subtly tinkered with the meaning of the songs in a way that one suspects the composers must have anticipated. Singers and arrangers can take the songs and provide them with a little something extra: a new tempo, a different groove, a Latin or a jazz accent that they never had on Broadway. Also, this collection of 17 songs acheives the almost impossible task of being specific and universal at the same time.
