Cathy Lam has created a passel of characters so weirdly wonderful that you want to hang out with them all day just to see what they'll do next. It's a ride that's both hilarious and poignant, and all the while you cling to the edge of the pick up truck because you'll want to make sure you stay in for the whole trip.

After fleeing her bad fiance in Boston, Julia goes to the only place she’s ever felt was home - her aunt Lydia’s farmhouse in Oregon.

This book has one of the best opening sentences ever -- "I left my wedding dress hanging in a tree somewhere in North Dakota." This debut novel by Cathy Lamb follows Julia Bennett's journey from abused child to abused fiancee to independence. Along the way, she forms a core group of friends that also have challenges but support each other. This novel shows you that change, while often difficult, can be accomplished with surprises and rewards along the way.

I have read this and two other books by Cathy Lamb and have found her subject matter/writing style to be funny and engaging.

However, many of her characters are too one-dimensional to be very sympathetic or compelling.

The settings and subject matter of all her books (Oregon and women finding salvation in a small town) are very much the same. Reading her books back to back is not the best way to experience them.
