ILLUSTRATIONS: The pictures are paintings that are at times a little bit abstract with music notes raining down and a moon with a face looking down. They have a poetic and lyrical quality that follows the text.
THE GOOD: This book is based on the Bible verse in Psalms: For you are fearfully and wonderfully made. It is meant to celebrate a new life and the fact that every life is unique and like no other. And yes, I believe all of creation (such as the polar bear's dancing) celebrate with the creation of each new life as this is a way of praising God for his amazing work. Some reviewers have said this book can lead to making a child believe they are the center of the universe, but I disagree. This book talks about a child's uniqueness, not that they are better than anyone else (For never before has the world...known a you, my friend..."). And doesn't every child want to know they are special, unique, and loved just for being who they are?
THE NOT AS GOOD: Because the pictures are somewhat abstract, they may not hold the interest of the 2-4 age range.
RECOMMENDED AGE RANGE: Age 0-4. This book can be read to the 0-2 age range during cuddle time. What a wonderful way to convey love to your child even before he/she fully understands the words.
This one's for the parents! A beautifully illustrated and touching book. A hard one to read without crying.
