My first Ross MacDonald book after learning that he was supposed to be the best hard-boiled detective writer after Hammett and Chandler. While this book was OK, I am not convinced that he is in the league of those two great writers.
"The Chill" won the Silver Dagger Award of Great Britain in 1964. Since it was published 14 years after "The Moving Target," hardboiled Lew Archer is modernized somewhat: his antagonism toward police authority and his chauvinism is toned down. I would rate this novel at 4.50 stars.
