I adore the art in the Serendipity books, and I longed to read them all when I was a child. I'm now slowly working my way through them with my own children.
Flutterby is a tiny winged horse who doesn't know what she is, so she tries to fit in with various other groups (the ants, the bees, the butterflies) but doesn't quite fit. Eventually, somebody shows her her reflection and she learns what she really is and finds her own place to "fit". A lovely message told in a not-overly-hokey way.
