I was intrigued by the initial fantasy premise of the story but, in the end, disappointed by the plot development and ending. Or is the "great Victorian collection" a metaphor for the "American Dream"?

Anthony Maloney, an assistant professor of history of the 19th century in Britain, is in California to attend a seminar. After the last day of the seminar he goes sightseeing in southern California. The next morning, when he awakens and looks out the window of his motel room, a marvellous collection of Victorian art, curiosities, and artifacts fills the parking lot. Is it real, how did it get there, and how will Maloney cope with the notoriety and distraction from his problems with his wife?
