Not as good as the debut of Dave Robicheaux but still has some really good moments of dialogue and action

A good read....details the “adoption" of Alafair and the murder of his wife Annie. But Dave gets the bad guys in the end, more or less within the law. This novel is pre-Clete Purcell but Dave does some roughing up of his own.
He is a very descriptive writer, particularly about nature on the bayou.
