This is not a definitive documentary. It's more like a basic outline. It leaves out important details. It doesn't go in depth, for example, about the involvement of the African elites in the slave trade. The film also perpetuates the good paternalistic image of masters without concentrating on the physical, psychological, and emotional affects of the atrocious system of slavery. Better ones to watch: Hidden Colors (1 & 2), Africans in America, Slavery and the Making of America, Slavery by Another Name, and African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross.

This is THE film to watch if you are in any way interested in the history and struggles of the African American community. From before the first ship docks into the new world to the aftermath and conditions of these people's 'freedom'. Powerful, wonderfully narrated and presented. A 7 part series that you WILL find impossible to not watch back-to-back. 5/5 you could not ask for a better film. A MUST watch.
