With a radical take on narrative, disturbing yet beautiful cinematography, and a highly sophisticated use of on- and offscreen sound, Martel turns her tale of a decaying bourgeois family, whiling away the hours of one sweaty, sticky summer, into a cinematic marvel. This visceral take on class, nature, sexuality, and the ways political turmoil and social stagnation can manifest in human relationships is a drama of amazing tactility and one of the great contemporary film debuts.

La Cienaga is Spanish for the swamp. It seems that the idea of the film is to show the aimlessness and the crudeness of the conditions of Argentina. The people in this film are a mess. You know that this is not an ordinary film, when it starts out with a bunch of aging, rich drunks, and none of them helps one who falls down in a drunken stupor. Beware, as the director tosses a bewildering number of characters at the audience and you lose track of who is who. Maybe the characters are not important. I suspect that this will be the least understood of the films I see this year. Really, there is no plot – just degradation after degradation.
