In 1920s London, brutal and bloodthirsty murder has stained the plush carpets of a handsome London townhouse. The victim is the glamorous and rich Emily French. All the evidence points to Leonard Vole, a young chancer to whom the heiress left her vast fortune and who ruthlessly took her life. At least, this is the story that Emily's dedicated housekeeper Janet Mcintyre stands by in court. Leonard however, is adamant that his partner, the enigmatic chorus girl Romaine, can prove his innocence.

Why remake a movie that was essentially perfect already?

A really good movie. I especially like the twist at the end.

Although I cannot fault the acting and the costumes (Andrea Riseborough and Toby Jones being both excellent) , I think this ponderously- paced production was poorly scripted and directed. In an attempt (presumably) to jazz it up for a modern audience the script was sprinkled with rather non-Christie-like four-letter words, and suggestive sexuality, while the whole thing was filmed in various degrees of gloom--night, twilight, smog, poorly lit room--until late in the film. If that was meant to be metaphorical, I would sooner have been able to see what the heck was going on. I also think some of the extra levels of plot woven into Christie's original story in a bid to ratchet up the psychological complexity just slowed the whole thing down.

A agree with other posters, so dim and dark. It was almost telling how the end would occur. I do not admire the way they dragged the story out. The first time I have FF during one of AC show. I usually love any AC movie/show. It did have great costumes.

Very enjoyable, good story. Charles Laughton is hilarious with his crabby but witty comments.. Amusingly his nurse in the movie was his wife in real life. Highly recommend especially if you like older movies.

In 1957 some good stars made 'Witness for the Prosecution': Tyrone Power, Marlene dietrich, Charles Laughton and a host of other respected actors. The movie moved right along and was a pleasure to watch. Now we come to 'The Witness for the Prosection' in 2016 and it stinks! The lighting is so muted that the characters might as well carry around flashlights so we can see who they are. This production was two-part miniseries and I had to fast forward to get to the end. Tortuous watching. None of these actors has an iota of charisma.

This superior version is based on the original material and NOT from the play as is the supposed 1957 "classic". It is very atmospheric and dirty (like London would have been at that time) with a few flashbacks to WWI instead of the sanatized courtroom setting. Also, I never understood the obsession with Marlene Deitrich; I always found her to be quite creepy.

There are three twists to this story. Your response to the movie will probably depend upon whether you think the twists a) shocking, b) obvious, or c) interesting but not really a surprise. As always, British TV does historical dramas' settings and costume very well.

I like young men. I like their company. I like their skin. I like their muscles... their musk... their gleam, their vigour, their heft... and their spring. I like to look.

You men. You fxcking men!

What you'll do to win, how far you'll go. You have a ruthless streak in you, John. What you'll do to win, how far you'll go.

We are what happens when you butcher the young, when you cheat us, you lie to us, you expect us to be grateful just for being alive. when you cheat us, you lie to us, you expect us to be grateful just for being alive.

And I've tried to forgive you... and I've tried to love you and I can't. Because you came home... and he didn't. I will always look after you... cook for you, clean your house. I'll stand by your side. I will be proud when you do well, but love you? I can't.
