It's hard to improve on the comments of ba_library below. What struck me about season two of THE LAST KINGDOM is that the pursuit of power must be the primary source of all narrative. Alexander Dreymon, the German actor who is the star of the series, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, is flawless. For anyone who enjoys HBO's GAME OF THRONES or History Channel's VIKINGS, THE LAST KINGDOM is a must-see.

The Last Kingdom season 2 covers the books #3)The Lords of the North and #4) Sword Song of Bernard Cornwell’s series the Saxon Stories. It is the story of Uhtred born Saxon, captured by the Danes as a child and raised by a Danish family. Season 2 has Uhtred appointed by King Alfred of Wessex to be his War Lord. Alfred’s dream is to unite the numerous Saxon kingdoms into one - into England. The petty kingdoms are in constant conflict, the Dane (Vikings that have permanently settled in England) presence keeps increasing and threatens to overwhelm the Saxon population. The very pious King Alfred must take action – which in this series usually calls for a shield wall (that doesn’t appear until episode 4 this season) but there is a big battle at the end. If you don’t remember much from Season1 you might want to watch The Story So Far in the Bonus section before starting on Season 2. It has been quite awhile since I have read the books, so I get a bit confused about some of the characters. I remember Finan from the books (the Irish warrior) but didn’t remember Uhtred met him on the slave ship. Also, Aethelwold (he is around a lot in Season 2) he is Alfred’s nephew (Alfred’s brother was King of Wessex and Alfred succeed him upon his death) so Aethelwold feels he should King of Wessex. I know Uhtred gets married about 10 times throughout the series. Think he is on wife number 3 in Season 2. Of course, bottom line is Uhtred just wants back his ancestral property in Bebbanburg. Action packed, lots of fighting, good entertainment (especially if you have read the books).

Fantastic. The drama is compelling. The European casting is superb. The sets are gorgeous, even when covered in filth. And no one has ever looked better on a horse than actor Alexander Dreymon as Utred, Son of Utred whose determination to recover his stolen lands, wealth, and title drive his epic adventures in Anglo Saxon England.
