A stirring look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand. A portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.

Extremely bored for the first third. Then I read these reviews and realized I'd be bored for the next 2/3rds. So I quit!!!

The cinematic equivalent of watching someone do their taxes

If you are looking for a cure to insomnia, then this movie is for you. Watching paint dry is more exciting than this flick.

Can't people find any better criticism than "boring"? Like your life is so exciting clueless commentators! If you're familiar with any of the films directed by Kelly Reichardt, which include "Wendy & Lucy," "Meek's Cutoff," and "Old Joy," you know that her films are deliberately paced, understated, and, yes, slow. It's like calling Jim Jarmusch's films boring. It pretty much misses the point. Anyway, her latest film, based on stories by Maile Meloy (who brother is the head Decemberist), is a nuanced and intimate look at the lives of three women, whose stories are linked by the vast, sometimes bleak, sometimes beautiful Montana landscape. Laura Dern is a lawyer with a difficult client, Michelle Williams is an unhappy wife looking to build a new home, and, in the most affecting segment, newcomer Lily Gladstone is a lonely farmhand who quietly falls for a lawyer/teacher (Kristen Stewart). It's a film that, I think, rewards your patience and has strong performances, good use of landscape, and an emotional depth that sneaks up on you. I'd ignore the "boring" comments and decide for yourself.

With great actresses like Laura Dern and Michelle Williams I expected to like this film more than I did... I cannot put my finger on exactly why I was disappointed, but the first story involving the hostage situation seemed unbelievable. Perhaps the fact that this film portrays three unrelated heroines and story lines, I did not bond well with the characters. Two weeks after viewing the film I cannot clearly recall the middle story. Mild positive recommendation. Kristi & Abby Tabby

I felt the stories were left unfinished but I guess that's the point. Life goes on and we don't know what will happen or where we'll end up. I enjoyed it.

I watched this film based on critic's reviews and was disappointed. Certainly not a "bad" movie but ......

Critics rated this film very highly for its subtlety and nuance.
We rate it Five Yawns, for its stultifying pace, flat and uninteresting characters, and almost total absence of plot.

A quiet, understated film about four everyday women just trying to get by.

A very good movie. Three stories of three women lightly intersected. Calm and serene even with the hostage scene.
