"Vivian Miller is a dedicated CIA counterintelligence analyst assigned to uncover the leaders of Russian sleeper cells in the United States. On track for a much-needed promotion, she's developed a system for identifying Russian agents, seemingly normal people living in plain sight. After accessing the computer of a potential Russian operative, Vivian stumbles on a secret dossier of deep-cover agents within America's borders. A few clicks later, everything that matters to her -- her job, her husband, even her four children -- are threatened. Vivian has vowed to defend her country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. But now she's facing impossible choices. Torn between loyalty and betrayal, allegiance and treason, love and suspicion, who can she trust?"-- Provided by publisher.

Just keep reading. At one point I thought that so many bad choices had been made and rationalized, that the story was hopeless. I plowed on and it did get to a tipping point that allowed for the possibility of good triumphing. Lots of extreme twists throughout the book. Also, there were so many opportunities for the book to end, but it continued with yet other twists. There HAS TO BE a sequel.

This was a really good read. It had a different twist to a great mystery. Definitely worth the read.

Who better than a former CIA Analyst to write a CIA thriller? Yes, Karen Cleveland is that but she is more; she is a mother and she knows what it would be like to face a battle between her need to protect her children and be true to her job which means her country too. Vivian Miller faces this battle when she uncovers a secret that will threaten her job, her family, and even her life. She's in a situation where no matter what she decides to do her family will never be the same again. Cleveland tells Vivian's story in a gripping way and you're sure to keep turning the pages till you reach the surprising finish.

Need to Know is a very good debut novel. I didn't expect the ending until I had about 1 page to go. Maybe others saw it coming, but I didn't. I would definitely read another novel by Karen Cleveland. It was a fun page-turner.

There’s a lot of suspense in the book that’s constantly building. It isn’t an action book and it isn’t James Bond. Vivian works for counterintelligence at the CIA. She enjoys her work and gets satisfaction from knowing she’s keeping her home country safe. But what happens when she discovers a secret close to home?

Maybe I’m cynical, but Vivian’s far more trusting than I am, hence the 3.5 stars and not 4-5. There’s a great deal of conflict, but the book is somewhat predictable, so it wasn’t as suspenseful as it could have been. Overall a good, quick read that’s worth picking up.

Meh! If you want the spy version of a Harlequin romance, this is it. Those of us raised on the Cold War Thrillers of the 70's and 80's will be disappointed by this book. It is a good summer book, light reading, but certainly nothing that makes me want to come back for more. I wanted to turn the main character in just for being so insipid.

Great book. Finally after so many disappointing books it was a pleasure to read a book that held my interest and kept me guessing. Well written and great characters. Bravo!

Very highly recommended. A tightly plotted, intense, psychological spy thriller, with twists right up to the end. I can't wait for her next book.

Karen Cleveland’s frost novel, Need to Know, is an unusual thriller page-turner, interweaving a threat to national security CIA tradecraft with a threat to the integrity of a family. Timely, it involves Russian spying and infiltration of U.S. intelligence networks. It combines spousal suspicions and betrayal with the need for a family’s self-preservation sought though the couple’s need for exoneration. I’m usually onto a solution in a story of this type, but the ending was a real surprise to me.
