I read the original H.P. Lovecraft short story first, just to see if it made me appreciate the film more... turns out, you really don't need to do that, this film is its own entity, and it's outrageous. Jeffrey Coombs is brilliant as the young mad doctor; somber and deadly serious most of the time, but retaining a wonderfully dry wit. The music and the effects are top-notch, and of course, there's plenty of fanservice. I'm sure Lovecraft himself would be more than satisfied with this adaptation...
