An unlikely success story given that Gorillaz isn't really a band. The brainchild of Blur's Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz was a loose collection of musicians with Hewlett creating animated characters and Albarn acting as ringleader. What seemed a gimmick turned into an actual band that played live, albeit with Albarn often off to the side, and produced a number of albums. This, their third album, has maybe the most impressive roster of guests (Lou Reed, De La Soul, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Mark E. Smith), but lacks an anchoring single like "Clint Eastwood" or "Dare." Like all their albums, the mix of styles and all over the map quality is both the appeal and the drawback.
