Cleary has always been wonderful at presenting the world from a child's point of view, and that is especially true here, as she recounts her life in the Willamette Valley and Portland in the 1920's and '30's. She mentions having wanted to read books about kids from her neighborhood, and of course she went on to write many of these. Those who've read them will enjoy spotting the parts of Cleary's real life that made it into her fiction.
