The Washington Post said it best. Calling Isabel Allende "one of the greatest writers of our time". She has certainly earned her place at the table alongside Marquez, Fuentes, Dorfman, and the other greats to emerge from Latin America. I did notice, and correct me if I'm wrong, this was the first time in a fictitious work that she mentions her uncle Salvador Allende and dictator Augusto Pinochet by name. President Allende was assassinated and Pinochet installed by a military coup with the help of the CIA. Interesting. Maybe because now Chile is governed by decency. This novel resonates with the times we live in, and i cannot recommend this book enough.
